The world is becoming a weird place. Not just because we’re all getting older, but because everything with which we are familiar keeps shifting and changing in meaning and purpose. Words don’t mean what they used to. Teenagers no longer date, or even “go out.” Today they are “talking” which can mean anything from what we would have called dating to having sex. There’s no telling what it means, if it means anything at all. Cartoons and comic strips are no longer artistic, like they were in my childhood, they are jaggy and primitive looking, they are what I would call lousy artwork.
Art and music today are teeming with violence and becoming so dark it’s hard to find anything to appreciate. It’s everywhere around us. Music is no longer very musical in the world of popular music. It’s filled with driving beat/rhythm and words you can barely understand. Very little melody, just repetition and noise. When our children grow up, will they have any sense of beauty if this world of art is all they ever see?
The only way to keep beauty and real music alive for future generations is to introduce it to our children. Show them the great stuff and they won’t find the really inane and dark stuff so attractive. At least that’s what I hope.
