Down the tube…
I’ve just about given up watching television. Most of the shows have become so mindless I can’t stand to watch, and the stations I do like have almost endless repeats. But the truly frustrating element of TV is the commercials.
Commercials have reached the place where I actually want to applaud the few times I see a clever one. I love the gecko, for example, I could listen to his accent for hours. But there’s absolutely nothing about those commercials that connects me or makes me want to switch to GEICO. And the idiotic ones with the celebrities are embarrassing…talented people stooping to do such drivel is degrading.
And then there are those SONIC commercials. Obviously, people who eat at Sonic must be mindless idiots possessing no common sense whatsoever…so I would REALLY want to eat there, wouldn’t I?
And then there are drugs. C’mon, people, a bunch of old guys in a band singing Viva Viagra is not incentive for me to ask the doctor to prescribe it if needed. And I love that commercial for the arthritis medication that may cause rare forms of cancer. Let’s see, do I want creaky joints and aches and pains or cancer and chemotherapy?? Tough choice.. Remember when that seashell stuff came out for weight loss and the side effects included incontinence and uncontrollable diarrhea? Wow, that’s a selling point!
I think the last good commercial that I enjoyed that made me want to try the product was the California Raisins…at least that clever spot connected the dots between product and gimmick! Or maybe it was the “Here’s Bob” commercials. The product probably doesn’t work, but it’s definitely a clever commercial series that gives a positive message about the product.
Got a favorite annoying or enjoyable commercial? Sound off here, I’d love to hear about it. And…have a happy period!
