Truth in Advertising
In a quest for better health as I get older, I try to choose my foods and drinks more carefully than ever. We’ve added a small serving of pomegranate juice to our daily regimen, because of its health benefits and probably drink green tea or white tea a couple of times a day. I take note of the new drinks in the grocery store and check out the labels for new and healthy products.
I’ve begun to notice these GORGEOUS drink bottles with great pictures of fruit on the labels, colorful designs, very attractively packaged. Propel does this great ad campaign with vibrant color and touts the positive benefits of its “Fitness Water” which is “Now available in 13 great flavors, Propel Fitness Water and new Propel Calcium are sure to refresh your active body. They’re both vitamin-enhanced and fitness focused with 10 calories so bodies in motion can stay in motion.” What do they sweeten this powerhouse of fitness with? Splenda…and artificial sweetener!
Dasani Flavored Water – The new Dasani Lemon and Dasani Raspberry are two of the flavors of water beverages most preferred by consumers. DASANI Lemon and DASANI Raspberry are naturally flavored and lightly sweetened with Splenda to provide a water alternative without calories or carbohydrates.
Aquafina FlavorSplash – Want the benefits of water without giving up taste? FlavorSplash is filtered water with a splash of natural fruit flavors and sweetened with sucralose ? Each serving with zero calories, no sugar and no carbs.
FlavH2O – Mineral water, fructose, carbon dioxide, citric acid, malic acid, acesulfame potassium, aspartame (contains phenylanine), sodium citrate, potassium sorbate, flavor
Nestle Pure Life – boasts specially purified water. And they add, “To create our Nestlé Pure Life Natural Fruit Flavored Water Beverage, we take the goodness of pure, refreshing water and add the essence of real lemon, raspberry, orange, or strawberry to create natural fruit flavors.” Wow, sounds really promising, doesn’t it? “Then we sweeten the taste with SPLENDA® Brand sweetener for delicious 100% carb-free and calorie-free refreshment.” Okay now, you’ve gone to all the trouble to have extra purified water and all natural fruit flavors….and then you add ARTIFICIAL SWEETENER??? Gimme a break!
Clearly Canadian – In 1988, Clearly Canadian® sparkling flavoured water captured the taste of a new generation of beverage consumers. In the process, Clearly Canadian helped pioneer what is now called the New Age or Alternative Beverage category — a beverage category worth more than $13.2 billion in North America. A beverage category where innovation is the single greatest driver of growth. Carbonated water, cane sugar, natural flavour, citric acid, sucralose (SPLENDA ® Brand)
Everywhere you turn there seems to be some form of artificial sweetener added to these “healthy” products. No thanks!
