Down the tube…
I’ve just about given up watching television. Most of the shows have become so mindless I can’t stand to watch, and the stations I do like have almost endless repeats. But the truly frustrating element of TV is the commercials.

Although technically I’m part of the baby boomer generation, I guess I was born on the back side of it. I didn’t become a teenager until 1969. So I was born too late to be part of the hippie movement. Too late to have a clue about protesting Vietnam. It was happening around me, but […]
We thought it was our dream house when we came here. I guess I’ve mentioned before that we’ve lived here in Floyd for twenty years now, but I probably haven’t said much about our house. It’s at least a hundred years old, and was built strong and big.
As a very visually-oriented person, color matters to me. I like vivid, rich colors. I’ve decided my next “collectible” focus will be stained glass. Not that painted on stuff, REAL stained glass pieces that use real colored glass. I love the look of sunlight streaming through the colors.
Sometimes I miss being younger. It was almost yesterday that I was in my twenties, full of energy, thinking I had all the answers, heading into the future to make my mark. Thirty years later I’m approaching my fifty-second New Year’s eve. And it’s been dreary and overcast and that always makes me quiet and […]
Christmas would be a really neat holiday if it didn’t last so long. I like the lights and decorations, and I love the music. But do we really have to start thinking about it and planning for it in October?
My second son moved to North Carolina last weekend. He hasn’t completely settled in yet, so he hasn’t changed his address to the new one. So his mail still comes here where we save it for him. Ordinarily he gets one or two pieces of mail a month. This week he got seven in only […]
The title is taken from an old country song I heard growing up. The chorus of the song said, "I’m little but I’m loud, I’m poor but I’m proud. I’m countrified and I don’t care who knows it. I’m like a bantam rooster in a big red rooster crowd: I’m puny, short, and little, but […]
And today I feel about 75. Phase two of getting my folks moved down here from Maryland took place yesterday, as our crew went up to get what they hoped would be the last load of stuff to complete the move. Naturally, the best laid plans of mice and men…
Erma Bombeck probably said it best: Family…the ties that bind…and GAG! I’m a strong believer in the family. When we moved here I began working on researching my family tree. I knew very little about either side, the Shelors or the McCoys. Once we found out that my great-grandfather was from Floyd County, the search […]
My computer began to bog down this morning. I finally rebooted it, only to get a black screen with the ominous message: ERROR! System fan failure. Please service your PC as soon as possible.
I love autumn, with the cooler weather and colorful leaves, although I’m always a little sad when it arrives because it means winter isn’t far behind. I am not a lover of cold weather. And now that I’m over 50, I recognize that I’m in the autumn of my life and winter with its snow […]
